Cactus are a family of perennial succulent plants from the order Caryophyllales. It is divided into four subfamilies. The most numerous genus is Mammillaria.

It is believed that cacti emerged evolutionarily about 30-40 million years ago, when South America and Africa were already significantly separated from each other by tectonic processes, but North America was not yet united with South America. Although no fossil remains of cacti have been found to date, it is believed that they originated in South America and relatively recently - 5-10 million years ago - spread to the northern continent.

Representatives of the cactus family, according to Labouret, became known in Europe shortly after the discovery of America, from where some Opuntia were exported, and then other genera, as decorating garden plants.

Species with articulated and compressed branches were known as Opuntia, and species with longitudinal ribs and grooves were known as cacti.

The first attempt at classification belongs to Turiefor, who established two genera: Opuntia and Melocactus, placing them, however, rather far from each other.

Plumier, who observed many cacti in the Antilles, established the third genus Peireskia, to which he assigned species with flat leaves.

Later, a new genus Epiphyllum was proposed, which included cacti with flat stems, and then many authors established the fourth genus Cereus, with erect stems, like candles.

Subsequently, Linnaeus combined all the cacti into one genus Cactus, which was assigned to the order Succulentae and placed next to the genus Mesembryanthemum.

Adanson divided the cacti into three genera and placed them in the Portulac family, next to the Mesembriantems and very close to the Grossularieae family.
