Mazarin tomatoes: characteristics, cultivation features

 Mazarin tomatoes: characteristics, cultivation features

Mazarin is another variety, because of which there are lively disputes on the forums of gardeners. Some tomatoes grow large and sugary, others are of ordinary size and not outstanding in taste. Still others complain: before Mazarin was large, now it is smaller. And the reason this time is not a mix-up. In fact, there are two Mazarin, each of which is a respected and well-known agricultural company.

The story of two different tomatoes under the same name - Mazarin

Studying reviews about this variety, dated in different years, I encountered contradictions, and too obvious. In different reviews of Mazarin gardeners, it is either a determinant hybrid, or an indeterminate variety. The excitement about the novelty rose back in 2008. Members of the forum shared their plans to sow Mazarin. Seeds were not sold in every city, and the desire to grow large, fleshy and well-publicized tomatoes was so great that some shared the seeds with each other by mailing them out. But most of them ordered seeds on the manufacturer's website, the Biotekhnika agricultural firm.

At that time, there was no confusion yet, everyone grew and praised Mazarin, calling him a fruitful analogue of the Ox heart. But already in 2011, disputes began in the spirit of: "You have a different Mazarin, probably he has degenerated" or, conversely: "This one is most likely improved, but completely different from the previous one." To write off all this on a re-grading will no longer work. It turned out that different tomatoes under the same name were brought out by two agricultural firms: Aelita and Biotekhnika.

According to the State Register of Plants, the originator of Mazarin tomatoes is Aelita. It was her employees who submitted an application to the Variety Testing Commission in 2012. A year later, the tomato received the status of a selection achievement, was included in a single list with a description of varietal characteristics, zoned for all regions of the Russian Federation.

New from Aelita - Mazarin tomato

But Mazarin from Biotechnics cannot be ignored. After all, it was his seeds that gardeners wanted so much to buy in 2008, and today some have been growing it for 5 and some for 10 years in a row. The Biotekhnika company was founded in 1990 and is proud of its selection achievements, one of which is the giant tomato Mazarin. Until the seed industry has been put in order, and there are such incidents as different tomatoes under the same name, we will have to figure out for ourselves the peculiarities of two different Mazarin.

More information on the different Mazarin tomatoes

There is more information from Aelita about her Mazarin:

  • the number of seed chambers is 3-4;
  • yield - 13.5-14 kg / m²;
  • 97% of fruits are of standard size and shape;
  • the hybrid is resistant to viruses of tobacco mosaic and black spot.

Both firms (Aelita and Biotekhnika) speak about the excellent taste of their tomatoes, the flesh is fleshy and sugary.

I am amazed at this confusion with varieties. And what then do other firms under the name Mazarin sell? An illustrative example in the video. A gardener from Mazarin seeds from the Siberian Garden grew a bush 50 cm high, although the description on the package indicates that this is an indeterminate, that is, a tall tomato.

Video: Mazarin from the Siberian Garden

I think it is worth dwelling on the version that there are two Mazarin, both are the result of different selections that were carried out by two well-known seed companies. Only one company created the variety earlier (Biotekhnika), and the second - later (Aelita), but entered it into the State Register. The same Siberian Garden sells seeds to Mazarin (Biotekhnika) and Mazarin (SibSad). The packages are different, but the descriptions on them are the same, they coincide with the characteristics of a tomato from Biotekhnika, and we have already seen what grows from the seeds of Mazarin (SibSad). Sedek also sells Mazarina seeds with a description of tomatoes from Biotechnics, that is, mid-season, indeterminate and large-fruited. It turns out: it is these tomatoes that are more popular, if only because they have been grown by gardeners for more than 10 years, this is an old and well-known variety.

Features of growing indeterminate tomatoes Mazarin (Biotechnics)

Indeterminate varieties with unlimited stem growth, and even an average ripening period, are traditionally grown in greenhouses and only in the south - in open ground. Sow seedlings in early March, plants can be transplanted into the greenhouse in May, and in open ground in June. In the seedling period, tall varieties are inconvenient in that their stems grow long and unstable, fall to one side, bend. Therefore, you have to:

  • make 2-3 picks in a larger container;
  • sometimes add fresh soil;
  • tie up if necessary.

Between transplants, give one top dressing with a complex fertilizer for seedlings, for example, Fertika Lux. To get the maximum Mazarin harvest from Biotechnics, you should heed the manufacturer's recommendations:

  1. When planting in a permanent place, place no more than three plants per square meter of the bed.
  2. In each landing hole, add 1 tbsp. l. a mixture of superphosphate and potassium sulfate, that is, you must first mix these fertilizers 1: 1.
  3. Water only in severe drought. Apparently, this variety has a very powerful root, capable of producing water on its own, and with an excess of moisture, it can rot.
  4. Form the bushes into 2 stems, leaving 3-4 brushes on each. As soon as the last, third or fourth brush is laid, back off 1-2 sheets and pinch the top.
  5. In the phase of filling the fruits, feed with magnesium sulfate (30 g per 10 l of water). This fertilizer improves the taste of fruits, stimulates the formation of sugars.
  6. Remove old, yellowing leaves during ripening.

Of course, tall tomatoes need to be tied to a trellis or high stakes. If you live in a region with a short summer, or the weather this season is rainy, and you also decided to grow an indeterminate variety in the open field, then form a bush into one stem, with the same number of brushes on it - 3-4. The fruits will grow large and have time to ripen or at least reach blanche ripeness. The purpose of this variety is salad. Tomatoes are delicious fresh. Suitable for making tomato juice and pasta.

Features of growing determinant tomatoes Mazarin (Aelita)

An early maturing and determinant hybrid is easier to grow. He shows himself perfectly both in the greenhouse and in the open field, manages to pour fruits in any Russian region. Agrofirm Aelita also gives recommendations for growing Mazarin tomato:

  1. Sowing seedlings from March 20 to April 10.
  2. One pick is obligatory in the phase of 1-2 true leaves.
  3. The optimum age of seedlings for planting on a garden bed is 45–55 days.
  4. Disembarkation dates: from May 15 to June 5. In the open ground, when the night frosts stop, and in the greenhouse - 2-3 weeks earlier.
  5. The density of placement in a permanent place is 4-5 plants per square meter, that is, according to the scheme 40x50 cm.
  6. After planting, classic care: watering, loosening the soil, weeding and feeding.

For top dressing, you can buy a special complex fertilizer for tomatoes (Red Bogatyr, Clean Leaf, Agricola, etc.) and apply it every 2 weeks, including the seedling period. Water 1-2 times a week so that the entire layer of soil in which the roots lie is soaked. Although the bush has limited growth, it is rather high - more than a meter, which means that a garter will be required.

Aelita does not deceive: almost all fruits on a bush of a standard shape and size correspond to the description and image on the package

Nothing is said about the formation on the website of Aelita, but all determinant varieties are traditionally grown with the removal of stepchildren only up to the first brush. All other ramifications are left. If grown in one stem, then there will be few fruits. In late July - early August, pinch all the tops and remove the flowering brushes. Fruits will not have time to form and grow from them.

The purpose of ripe tomatoes is universal. The very first ones, of course, will be eaten fresh. Surplus crops are harvested for the winter in the form of all kinds of pickles, salads, lecho, snacks.

Reviews of gardeners

You can find at least two different tomatoes on sale under the same name Mazarin. To grow exactly what you want, buy seeds on the manufacturer's website or in stores in your city, but in branded packaging with the logo of the author company. Each of the two Mazarin has its own cultivation technology.

Mazarin tomatoes are distinguished by their bright taste, disease resistance and yield. They take root well in different regions of Russia.

Botanical portrait of a bush

The bush of this plant grows above 2 m, and so that its stems do not break under their own weight, they must be strengthened and tied up. This tomato is constantly forming new "daughter" plants. To get a good harvest of fruits, you need to cut off all the shoots, leaving only one trunk. The foliage is large - the width and density enable the fruits not to burn in the sun. The roots of the plant are long - up to half a meter deep into the soil.

The main qualities of the fruit

If you take the appearance of Mazarin, then the fruit most resembles a giant strawberry. When cut, it resembles a heart. The vegetable is juicy and fleshy. These tomatoes have a hard skin of a pale red hue. Its hardness protects the fruit from damage. That is why they are easy to transport over long distances.

There are few seeds in Mazarin tomatoes, and the variety itself can be described as salad. It is not suitable for conservation. True, it can be cut and processed.

Yield indicators

Tomatoes are the leaders in yield. From one seedling, you can easily collect up to 14 kg of juicy and fresh fruits.

Collection, storage and use of the crop

The very first crop can be harvested at the end of the first month of summer, and the rest of the "portions" - until autumn, depending on the degree of ripeness. These tasty vegetables can be stored in ordinary plastic buckets.

With the arrival of the first frost, it is necessary to collect all remaining fruits from the branches of the plant, including unripe ones. Unripe tomatoes can ripen on their own in a darkened place, for example, in a pantry. Unprocessed vegetables can be stored for up to two months. You just need to periodically review them and remove the spoiled ones.

Mazarin is best suited for preparing fresh summer salads. But it makes good ketchup or tomato juice. Adjika using the fruits of this variety is also good.

The appearance of a Mazarin tomato

Mazarin belongs to determinant varieties, that is, it is limited in growth - usually in the open field it reaches a height of 110-130 cm, in a greenhouse - 180-200 cm. Ripens early (95-105 days in warm regions, 110-115 days - in colder climates).

Mazarin tomato grown in a greenhouse - video

The bushes form many stepchildren. The sturdy stems are covered with medium-sized, strongly split green leaves. Flowers with simple inflorescences are collected in a brush. In each hand, 5–6 fruits are tied. Unripe fruits are light green, ripe fruits are pink-red. The color is uniform, without green spots at the apex. The weight of the fruit, recorded in the state register, is 150-190 g, but the analysis of gardeners' reviews shows that usually the fruits are much larger (300-500 g). The shape of the tomatoes is very unusual, resembling a heart or strawberry, the surface is even.

Large heart-shaped fruits are covered with a dense, bright skin

The skin is firm, not prone to cracking. The dense, fleshy and rather juicy flesh hides a small number of seed chambers. The number of seeds is very small. The taste is sweet, without sourness. The fruits have a rich aroma.

Juicy fruits contain very few seeds.

Description of the variety and characteristics

On the seed packaging, the manufacturer indicates a brief description of the variety, which does not allow us to fully learn its benefits. Gardeners who successfully grow it on their plots share the secrets of how to grow this tomato.

They highlight the following characteristics:

  • A ripe tomato of this variety takes on a bright, red-raspberry color.
  • The shape of the fruit is heart-shaped, covered with a dense, shiny skin.

  • Ripening time from the moment of planting occurs after about 3.5 months.
  • Excellent yield can be up to 15 kg per m².

In cooking, they are used for fresh consumption, delicious salads are prepared from Mazarin tomatoes. You can prepare tomato juice, the variety is too large for preservation.

For the winter, the fruits are harvested in dried form.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the advantages of this variety, the following are boldly distinguished:

  • The plant is capable of producing crops even in hot weather and in extremely dry conditions at temperatures of +40 ºС.
  • The Mazarin tomato variety is bred in such a way that it is resistant to phytophthora and other diseases.
  • Excellent taste does not leave indifferent even gourmets.
  • Tomatoes grow large and are well stored, if necessary, you can remove them in a green state so that they ripen in the shade.
  • Summer residents consider the variety to be undemanding to care for. If everything is done correctly from the very beginning, a good harvest is guaranteed.

The disadvantages include: the need to tie up tall bushes.

To increase the yield, they need to be periodically pinned, otherwise the culture will become overgrown with unnecessary greens.

Agrotechnics for growing tomatoes Mazarin

Seeds for seedlings are sown at the end of February.

  • Sow in boxes that are placed on windows or in a greenhouse.
  • Previously, the seeds must be kept in the refrigerator on the lower shelf for a day, and then treated with means to prepare for planting seeds.
  • Soil with neutral acidity is ideal for growing. Potash fertilizers, superphosphate and wood ash should be added beforehand.
  • Provide regular watering, before sprouting, irrigate with a spray bottle.
  • For the successful germination of tomatoes, a suitable temperature of at least 23 degrees is needed for the variety.
  • To accelerate growth, summer residents use natural organic stimulants.
  • After picking seedlings, the plant needs feeding with a liquid composition with the addition of phosphorus, potassium.
  • In order for tomato seedlings to become resistant to frost, the boxes must be taken out into the street, the greenhouse must be often ventilated.

Harvested as the tomatoes ripen, depending on weather conditions, right up to the fall. Suitable for greenhouse cultivation of early tomatoes for sale.

Before planting the culture in the beds, the soil is well watered, it should be loose and fed with mineral additives. For the entire growing season, the bushes need to be fed 3-4 times.

Watering or irrigation should be provided to the bushes. To achieve high yields, they are tied to strong trellises and stepchildren are regularly removed. It is advisable to leave only a few brushes on the bush, it is better to remove the rest. In the rainy season, the bed must be loosened.

    How to care for tomatoes

Growing a vegetable crop will not produce positive results without proper care. If you do not pay attention to the subtleties, it will not be possible to grow large tomatoes, and there is no point in getting small tomatoes.

    Proper care is as follows:

    • For yield, add one tablespoon of superphosphate or potassium sulfate to each well.
    • Keeping the distance between the bushes, avoiding neglect - this reduces the yield. Place 2 - 3 bushes on 1 m².
    • It is important to regularly cut off the lateral shoots to form a powerful main stem.
    • When the phase of active growth begins, tomatoes are watered only during drought.
    • When the ovary forms, magnesium sulfate is required.
    • To obtain large fruits, remove the excess ovary at an early stage of its appearance.

The variety of mid-ripening tomatoes "Mazarin" is worthy of the attention of not only experienced, but also beginner gardeners.

Growing this tomato variety is fun, especially when you want to grow giant tomatoes.

Diseases and pests - how to treat

Diseases and pests bring great harm to the plant up to the destruction of the crop. If you do not start the fight in time, the gardener will face a major disappointment. The culprit will not be the tomato variety, but the wrong care, since "Mazarin" is considered a disease-resistant species.

  • Infection with fungal or viral diseases often occurs due to the lack of preventive measures. If, for example, stepchildren are not cleaned on time, the bushes become overgrown with greenery - this contributes to the development of diseases.
  • Excessive moisture in the soil leads to rotting of the bushes.
  • One should not forget about the means against the development of late blight, brown spot, midges. By using fungicides to treat bushes, infection can be avoided.

Biologics or folk remedies, such as a soap solution with the addition of soda or a decoction of onion peels, have proven themselves very well for this purpose. Gardeners praise the effect of Bordeaux liquid - this remedy has been proven for decades and is affordable. The best of the biologically active compounds is "Fitosporin".

    Similar varieties of tomatoes

The advantages of "Mazarin" are superior to the popular variety of tomato "Cardinal". Thanks to the giant size and taste of the fruit, the amazingly shaped tomato variety has gained great popularity.

It is considered the most common, no less than the "Pink honey" or "Sanka" tomatoes. The shape of the fruit is similar to the "Bull Heart" variety.

In addition, there are similar F1 hybrid analogs as described.

Tomato "Mazarin": tips for growing early ripe tomatoes

There are song charts, ratings of the popularity of politicians are being compiled, and tomatoes here also did not stand aside. The ten most popular varieties among Russian gardeners include the Mazarin tomato (see photos and videos), which is valued for its excellent taste, large fruits, and unpretentiousness.

    Cardinal, but not the same

In the middle of the 17th century, Cardinal Mazarin lived in France, known for his struggle with the Fronde, as well as for his political resourcefulness and determination. It is in honor of this figure that a large-fruited tomato was named - tasty, unpretentious and very fruitful.

There is also a Cardinal tomato on sale, and sometimes there is a confusion between him and Mazarin. It should be noted here that the Mazarin variety has nothing to do with the Cardinal variety, these are completely different tomatoes.

It was bred as a result of the selection work of Russian scientists, intended for the southern and central regions of the country. But the reviews of many gardeners who planted the variety are evidence that the tomato grows well under shelters and in greenhouses and in areas more northern from the center, showing good yields.

Tomato Mazarin F1 belongs to the group of early ripening tomatoes, the ripening period of the fruits is approximately 115-120 days after the first shoots.

Height - about 1.8 meters in a greenhouse, when grown in open ground, the plants will be slightly lower - up to one and a half meters. The bushes are strongly leafy, the leaves are carved, beautiful, rich green color.

A friable brush is formed above the 8th or 9th leaf, usually up to six fruits are formed in it. All subsequent brushes are formed in two sheets. The fruits are large, of an original shape, with a tip resembling hearts or a large strawberry. The resemblance to a berry is especially enhanced at the time of ripening of the fruits of the Mazarin tomato, when they acquire a bright raspberry color.

Fruits have a small number of seed chambers, few seeds, dense skin. Tomatoes of this variety do not crack. Fruits on the first clusters are usually the largest; with proper agricultural technology, they can reach a mass of up to 700-800 grams, in subsequent clusters a little smaller - up to 400 grams. The pulp is very juicy, fleshy, the taste of the fruit is wonderful, with a pronounced tomato aroma.

Mazarin is one of the best tomatoes for making salads, delicious tomato juice, sauces. Also, these tomatoes are great for complex culinary dishes - stuffing, baking with various fillings. They are not used for preservation,

Advantages and disadvantages of the Mazarin variety

It is not for nothing that Mazarin tomatoes are among the most favorite varieties of tomatoes among many Russian gardeners, and the reviews about him and the photos of the fruits are impressive. The list of advantages includes the following qualities:

    • high yield
    • tasty sweet fruits of large mass
    • unpretentiousness of tomato (quite suitable for those who are just starting to grow tomatoes and do not have enough experience)
    • drought resistance.

When creating optimal conditions in greenhouses, the tomato will bear fruit until frost, delighting with delicious fruits. Tomatoes can also be picked green, Mazarin fruits ripen well at home. If the season is not particularly favorable for tomatoes, Mazarin still differs from other tomatoes in that it sets fruit even with temperature fluctuations.

The fruits of this variety can be stored well, they are also suitable for transportation.

The tomato variety is resistant to most diseases, for which gardeners also appreciate it.

The plant does not have any special flaws, except that it can be noted that it is necessary to pinch the bush.

Also, in some cases, a yellow or green spot is formed near the stalk, which not everyone likes.

Otherwise, the tomato is almost perfect, the description of the variety corresponds to the real results, but you should not forget about systematic care and basic measures.

Features of agricultural technology of the Mazarin tomato variety

On sale you can see the seeds of the variety from different manufacturers, but judging by the reviews, the best material is sold by the Biotekhnika company.

To get tasty fruits at the optimal time, you must not be late with sowing seeds for seedlings. For Mazarin tomatoes, cultivation begins around the end of February and the beginning of March.

At this time, seeds are sown, and after the emergence of seedlings, additional lighting is organized.

A pick is required, it is carried out at the moment when two or three true leaves are formed at the seedlings. During the cultivation of seedlings, it is imperative to carry out two dressings (it is better to use complex preparations), and also do not forget about hardening. This will produce sturdy and non-stretched plants.

Landing in a permanent place is carried out only when a stable heat occurs, especially for landings on ridges, in open ground. Planting is carried out according to the scheme: two or three plants per square meter.

The bushes are immediately tied to stakes or trellises.

It is necessary to pay attention to the formation of the Mazarin bush, which grows and bears fruit best in one stem. For this, all stepchildren must be removed, and only five brushes are usually left on the plant for ripening. If formed into two stems, then each should have no more than four brushes, and even better three.

Despite the resistance of tomato to disease, you should not forget about the rules of agricultural technology and preventive measures. After watering, the greenhouse must be ventilated, all dead leaves must be removed from the bushes, and after the brushes are tied, all the leaves at the bottom of the stem must be removed.

When feeding (every 10-14 days), you should not abuse nitrogen-containing compounds, which only contribute to the growth of green mass. In addition, with such fertilizers, tomatoes are more likely to get sick and are affected by various pests.
