The best ideas for vertical beds for skilled summer residents

Types of vertical beds

There are ready-made vertical plastic flower beds. They are multi-tiered structures with cells for planting plants. Some are equipped with automatic irrigation systems that simplify the maintenance of the flower garden. The cost of such a device is far from budgetary, so many gardeners are content with homemade flower beds, which are in no way inferior to store-bought ones in aesthetic terms and convenience.

What are the vertical flower beds:

  • Tower - a metal or wooden rack with hooks on which flowerpots with flowers are suspended
  • Screen - a lattice or shield with shelves (hooks) for flower pots. Equipped with supports for stability on both sides
  • The blooming pillar is a tall cylindrical container filled with earth. At different heights, holes are made in its walls for planting seedlings
  • The tunnel is a long row of arches braided with ornamental plants.

Taking as a basis one of the types of flower beds and using various materials, you can model and create your own variations of a vertical flower garden.

Our summer cottage is a manor in the village: the territory is large, and there are many flower beds in the yard and in the garden. And once I jokingly told my wife that if it is cramped, let's make vertical flower beds. The wife immediately had an idea. It was early spring - the time for the formation of flower beds. We discussed where to start, determined where to set it, brought in old basins, buckets and pots and got to work.

For the lowest tier of the flower bed, they took a long sheet of iron and, having made holes, connected the edges with wire, we got a container without a bottom. They dug it into the ground a little, filled it up to half with pieces of polystyrene, then put a layer of plant residues and covered it with earth. A second tier was placed on top: a wide, leaky basin approached, which was also filled with soil. A large saucepan rose even higher, but nothing of the utensils came up to the very top, and we again made a small container from a piece of iron. All of this, of course, looked terrible. Now it was necessary to bring the flower bed to its normal form: the stainless steel was painted, and the rest was decorated with non-damp paper.
On this structure, the wife planted petunia seedlings and a little ageratum. It was convenient to water from a watering can, the plants took root well and bloomed well - it turned out to be a solid bright vertical flower bed. And it was difficult to determine what was hidden under this sea of flowers.

Moreover, every year we have a different flower bed, and it depends not only on what flowers my mistress planted, but also on the weather. In one year, there was a hot, dry summer, there was not enough water for irrigation, and a lot of petunias died. But for the morning glory there was freedom, she filled the entire flower bed, saved the situation, and thanks to her, our flower bed looked alive, green, blooming and made us happy.
We wish you all good health, new ideas and beautiful flower beds!

Mobile flower beds
Our dacha is only 4 acres, on which a house, a garden and a vegetable garden are crowded. There is no place for a flower garden, but I always really wanted my dacha to be buried in flowers. What to do? A designer friend helped me with advice. She suggested that flower beds can be mobile!
Indeed, flowers can be grown in buckets, barrels, basins, baskets, and even carts. All this I decided to use. I planted flowers in all unnecessary containers. The most unsightly - painted. And the site has changed!

If the container has large holes, cover it with plastic wrap. Paint the metal containers with light paint so that they are less heated from the sun. Add hydrogel to the soil mixture for mobile flower beds - it retains moisture well, and it evaporates quickly in containers. Choose drought-resistant plants: zinnia, chrysanthemums, tobacco, marigolds. Flowers that are not afraid of thickening are also suitable - violet, fuchsia, pelargonium. Ampelnye are suitable for pots - nasturtium, petunia, begonia.
When planting several types in one vessel, place the tallest in the center, and the undersized ones at the edges.

How to create a petunia flower bed

The owners will certainly ennoble the private courtyard with flowering crops. According to the aesthetic rules, the decoration of the courtyard is not even beds, but ornamental garden plants. So that they do not creep across the entire site and do not take up too much space (it is a pity to uproot the cherished beauty!), They are limited to flower beds. It turns out such bouquets blooming from early spring to late autumn. It depends on what crops to plant them.

To make the flower beds in front of the house look bright, it is worth using flowers in their creation - people from hot countries. This is where the real feast of colors is! And it's not for nothing that petunia, a native of South America (more precisely, Brazil), is so fond of growing as a floral ornamental crop. Its flowers are painted with rich shades of red, pink, orange, lilac and mottled white ... The size of the petal cup is small, and there is also a large one. Why is it not suitable planting material?

So, having decided on the type of flower, select the flower range. The flower bed can be one-color, or it can be with a gradient of transition from dark to lighter color. What shape should you choose? Concentric circles, contrasting stripes, "petals" of a large flower, geometric shapes and, in general, fantasy patterns invented by you personally. The main thing is that the pattern is clearly visible from the side.

Although petunia is also found perennial in nature, an annual form of culture is common in floriculture. So even better. Different patterns can be created every year. In different colors.

Along with erect stems, some petunias have curly stems. Such mini-vines are also beneficial to use in flower beds. For a multi-stage design in combination with straight stems, vines will come in handy as well as possible.

The root system of petunias is such that they do not need large spaces or capacities. It will take root well in small flower bed forms. Even in the hollow of an old tree or in a hollowed out stump. Landscape designers recommend unusual solutions! Petunia also feels great as a flowerpot.

Petunia perfectly coexists with other plants. Compositions in combination with levkoy, snapdragons, marigolds, begonias will look spectacular.

Petunias are not afraid of the heat. They have immunity. But, like plants of a subtropical climate, they prefer abundant watering (in no case a swamp). It is better to plant these flowers in seedlings and in sunny areas, but they will also accept partial shade.

Petunia is one of the most suitable and not whimsical plants for vertical beds.
