How to make a hammock with your own hands: general rules + two step-by-step master classes

A hammock is a comfortable place to relax, which can decorate any suburban area. The product, invented by the South American Indians, made it possible not only to provide a comfortable sleep, but also to effectively protect against flying midges and night dampness inherent in this area. Modern people use the hammock mainly for a short day's rest in order to relax in the shade of trees, enjoying the rustle of leaves and birdsong. There is nothing difficult in making a hammock with your own hands. It is enough just to stock up on the necessary materials, tools and the desire to create an original and functional element of the interior.

General recommendations for making hammocks

A hammock can become not only a wonderful decoration of the site, but a rather useful piece of furniture.

According to psychologists and scientists, a couple of hours of rest in a hammock can replace a full night's sleep.

When deciding to create a product, swaying in which it is pleasant to recuperate after a hard day, each of us will need to know a few basic rules:

  • Manufacturing material. Before making a hammock, you need to think over the variation of its execution and choose the fabric correctly. To create a durable product, it is advisable to choose camouflage, canvas, canvas fabric, calico or mattress teak. Synthetic materials, despite the fact that they are lighter and no less durable, are not advisable to use for sewing products, since they do not allow the body to breathe.
  • Cords for a wicker hammock. When choosing ropes, it is better to give preference to cotton threads, rather than synthetic ones. It is more convenient to work with cords made of natural threads when making products for weaving and tightening knots, as well as touching during rest.
  • Reliability of fastening of supports. You can place a hammock either between special supports or posts, or between two adjacent trees in the garden. If supports are specially installed for arranging a hammock, then they must be buried at least one meter. Among garden trees, the choice should be stopped on those with a trunk diameter of at least 20 cm.
  • Suspension height. The height of the hammock hanging above the ground is 1.5-1.6 meters. The distance between the supports is calculated as follows: 30 cm is added to the length of the product, on average it is 2.75-3 meters. In the absence of the ability to change the distance between the supports, the length of the hammock can be varied by changing the height of the tuck, creating a stronger deflection, or changing the tension.

It will be convenient to carry the mobile structure around the site and place it in any corner of the garden, thereby changing the scenery.

In order not to be tied to the arrangement of trees in the garden or already existing supporting structures when arranging a place for rest, you can make such a frame for any hammock

The most popular hammock designs

In order to better and more clearly show how to make a hammock with your own hands, we suggest considering several design options for this product. This will allow you to make the best choice that suits your preferences and capabilities. There are many options, some of them are presented below.

You can also build a hanging chair, read about it: https://diz-cafe.com/postroiki/podvesnoe-kreslo.html

Option 1 - Mexican "cocoon" of fabric

Such a hammock, which looks like a cocoon, is one of the easiest to manufacture and quite convenient to use.

Despite the simplicity of the product design, rest in such a hammock allows you to perfectly relax all muscles.

It is impossible to fall out of the cocoon. But in order to get out of it or change the position of the body, you also need to make some effort. When folded, the product takes up quite a bit of space and weighs no more than 1 kg, so it is convenient to take it with you to nature or on a hike.

This version of the hammock is quite simple to manufacture. In order to sew a Mexican hammock, it is necessary to prepare two pieces of dense fabric measuring 1.5-3 meters and a cord 20 m long, which can withstand a weight of 150-200 kg, for pulling and hanging the product. Both fabric cuts are folded together.

Pattern for sewing a standard single Mexican hammock

Cuts are sewn on both sides along the length of the pattern towards each other. The length of the line seam is 2 meters (shown in green in the figure). As a result, a tunnel with unfinished edges is formed. Areas of the pattern marked in the drawing with a yellow line are not sewn. This will allow you to lay the inner layer of the product with a water-repellent film or a synthetic winterizer soft rug, which will significantly increase the comfort of rest. The narrow side of the product, marked in red, must be tucked up 2-3 cm and sewn. The product is ready. It remains only to stretch the cord into the formed tunnel.

The stretched cord must be crossed and tightened at the ends, picking up the fabric. The tightening point is wrapped a couple of times with the same cord and tied in a knot

To attach a structure to a tree without damaging its bark, it is necessary to put a tube on the rope for suspension or put a cloth under it.

For the rest of young children and the elderly, you can improve the product by attaching the narrow side of a rectangular cut made according to the same pattern to wooden sticks

Option 2 - wicker hammock using macrame technique

Known to most of our compatriots, hammocks of Soviet times outwardly resemble a volleyball net.

Such a bed, which leaves a checkerboard pattern on the back of the vacationer, has been replaced by more comfortable and aesthetic handmade products.

In order to knit a comfortable and beautiful hammock, you need to learn how to weave several knots of the macrame technique. For work, you will need a strong rope or linen cord d = 8mm, as well as two wooden slats of the same size, about 1.5 meters long. To fix the rope, holes d = 20mm are drilled in the bars at an equidistant distance of 4-5 cm. The ratio of the hole diameter to the rope diameter should be 1/3, which will allow the rope folded in three to be more tightly fixed.

The length of the cord depends on the selected pattern. The calculation is carried out as follows: the distance from the rail to the rail must be increased three times, and then multiplied by the number of holes. So, in order to weave an openwork hammock with your own hands measuring 2.5x0.9m, you will need 150 meters of cord per pattern and 20 m for fastening the product to the support.

Having learned how to tie such a flat knot, you can make a rather nice openwork product, the pattern of which will not lose its shape during operation.

The technology of weaving hammock cords is quite simple. Each knot is tied with 4 ropes, the mesh size is no more than 7 cm.

The finished mesh is passed through the holes in the slats and connected into knots. Structural strength can be imparted with metal rings

Roses from napkins: photo

If you are considering options for a simple and beautiful festive table decoration, then be sure to follow do-it-yourself roses from napkins... They will be in perfect harmony with the setting of the festive table, with a tablecloth, and will become an excellent alternative to fresh flowers. Such flowers will surely cheer up all guests, and, of course, the hostesses will certainly want to know how you made such beauty with your own hands. Do not rush to explain to them the sequence of actions on your fingers, you can offer them a very simple master class that you used yourself.

  • Paper napkins of any color
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Thread

As you can see, the set of materials is very modest, we do not need any additional tools - no glue or a ruler. The main thing is to choose beautiful plain napkins: yellow or red ones are suitable for a festive table. Scissors are needed only at the very first stage, when it is necessary to cut one sheet into two parts.

One part should be tightly rolled into a roll, wrapped around a pencil, and then on both sides, move the bundle to the center of the pencil to make an accordion. The actions must be performed carefully so as not to damage the integrity of the material. When the "accordion" is formed, you need to carefully pull out the pencil, and wrap 5-6 napkins around in a circle to form a half of the future bud.

The peculiarity of this rose is that it consists of two parts - when the first part is ready, you can proceed to the second part in the same way. Then form a bud from two halves, tying the base with a thread or floral ribbon. By the way, a red or pink bud can be additionally wrapped in a green napkin with a carved edge to simulate a sepal.

And in order to quickly figure out how roses from napkins, step by step the instructions are at your disposal, and most importantly, repeat all the steps after the wizard, so as not to get confused in the key stages. You can also make a large rose, which will become not just a decoration of the table, but of the entire festive interior.

Papier-mache: piggy bank

To make a funny papier-mâché piggy bank, we will use toilet paper or newspapers, acrylic putty, acrylic paints, PVA glue, a balloon, foil, a foil reel.

The first step is to inflate the balloon. Then, in several layers, we apply prepared scraps of newspaper dipped in PVA glue and water on the inflated ball so that our piggy bank is not soft, but strong enough and let it dry.

In a plastic bucket, we will prepare a mass for papier-mâché: you need to tear toilet paper or napkins into small pieces and add PVA glue.

Mix everything well! We coat the future pig with the obtained "chewed paper".

When the papier-mâché frame dries well, the ball must be carefully burst and pulled out. Now we need to close the hole through which we pulled the ball: for this we glue it crosswise with masking tape and apply papier-mâché, leaving a small rectangular hole - this will be the slot where the money is thrown.

Divide the foil reel into four equal parts - it will serve as legs for our pig. We glue the legs to the pig with masking tape. Then we apply papier-mâché. The inside of the legs must be filled with something heavy - so our pig will become more stable. Sand or a small metal object, such as a nut or screws, will do.

We make a patch of foil for the pig, under which you need to form a mouth (upper and lower lip).

Now we need to sculpt eyes and ears for our pig - they can be made either from the remains of papier-mâché or molded from clay.

The flexible wire will serve as a tail for the pig: we twist it, covering the tail with the remnants of papier-mâché. After our pig is completely dry, it must be properly treated several times with acrylic putty and then wiped with a cloth soaked in water - this is how the pig's barrel will be leveled.

Our piggy is ready for painting!

First you need to apply dark paint, you can use several different shades. Then red paint is applied to the craft with a sponge.

Then - pink, and as the final stage - pink and white paints are applied. The last step is to apply white paint to the protruding surfaces. Our piggy bank is ready!

We offer you another version of the piggy bank, the step-by-step execution of which you can watch in the video:

Getting Started

First, the master makes the bolt of the locking mechanism from a square bar. It is necessary to make an "eyelet" in the crossbar.

After that, from a metal strip, using a matrix and a punch, the master makes three identical parts: two fasteners for the deadbolt and a striker.

Next, the master makes the last element of the locking mechanism - a handle.

Cut off a piece of the metal plate. On it we place the fastenings for the crossbar and the striker, and make the markings.

We drill all the necessary holes. Then we fasten all three parts with rivets. You will also need to weld a piece of square bar to which the handle will be attached.

At the last stage, we cut the metal plate into two parts, and you can start installing the latch on the chicken coop door or wicket.

See the video below for the step-by-step process of making a homemade locking mechanism. This idea was shared by the author of the YouTube channel jimmydiresta.

A hammock for a summer residence: the main stages of production

Before you start manufacturing, you need to consider a few nuances:

  • Material. The hammock is designed for relaxation, which means that it will have to withstand a lot of stress, so the choice of fabric is the main task. Durability and comfort depend on how high-quality and dense it will be. It is recommended to give preference to camouflage, canvas fabric, calico or mattress teak. It is better to refuse synthetics. Yet these are not natural materials that will cause discomfort.
  • Ropes. You will need ropes to attach the fabric to the base. For this, durable synthetic materials with a diameter of at least 10 mm are suitable.

  • The foundation. Some people choose to hang the hammock between installed poles, which are mounted in the ground for more than 1 m. Others prefer to place it between trees. In this case, it is extremely important that the trunk diameter is at least 30 cm.
  • Height. It is customary to hang the hammock at a distance of 1-1.5 m above the ground. In order to correctly install the supports, you need to make a simple calculation: 30 cm is added to the length of the fabric for the deflection. In any case, the height from the ground can be adjusted depending on the distance of the supports.
