Fertilizers for conifers
Shrubs and coniferous trees are a spectacular decoration of country houses. They are usually planted at the front facades or in the backyard area. Plants need enough nutrients to truly stay attractive and healthy, and any fertile soil will begin to deplete over time. It is necessary to figure out what fertilizers and in what quantity you need to use so that the conifers continue to fully grow and develop.
There are significant differences and individual characteristics between feeding deciduous and coniferous crops. Coniferous trees and shrubs are considered unpretentious and can grow for some time in an area with poor soil, but they tolerate an excess of fertilizers very poorly. They do not need additional nutrition in such quantities as for deciduous specimens. After all, they do not increase the mass of leaves and do not restore the crown in the spring, do not form fruits for harvesting. The small amount of nutrients needed to maintain annual growth will be sufficient.
Fertilizers for conifers
These evergreens are contraindicated in such fertilizing as azofoska, manure, mullein, herbal infusions, complex fertilizers and various organic mixtures from the garden. After such nutrition, crops begin to grow at an incredible rate and, in the end, turn yellow, and sometimes die. The composition of these fertilizers does not correspond to the preferences and requirements of these plants. It is the chemical composition that is recommended to pay attention to when purchasing special fertilizers for conifers in retail chains. Experts believe that inappropriate fertilization will do more harm than no additional nutrition at all.
Top dressing that can be used
A special mixture with magnesium content is necessary for the full-fledged process of photosynthesis, on which the nutrition of the needles depends. Fertilizers with this chemical element are recommended for all conifers and shrubs.
Experienced gardeners and plant growing experts recommend feeding crops only with mineral fertilizers.
Among organic fertilizers, preference should be given to vermicompost and rotted compost.
Top dressing that cannot be used
Any nitrogen-containing nutrient mixture with a high percentage of this element is contraindicated throughout the year. After such nutrition, young shoots that did not have time to ripen due to rapid growth do not withstand the winter cold and die.
It is not recommended to use mullein and manure from organic fertilizers. It is dangerous for conifers in any concentration and in any form.
During the summer season, crops need to be fed twice - in the first half of May and in the second half of August. A later second feeding is undesirable, since it contributes to the formation of a new growth, which simply does not have time to form and grow stronger before the arrival of winter cold weather. These two procedures will be enough for the full growth, development and preservation of the decorative qualities of coniferous crops for twelve months.
When using liquid fertilizers that are quickly absorbed by the roots, you must strictly follow the instructions. It indicates how to make the desired concentration of feeding, and in what volumes to apply it. The finished solution is introduced into the soil of the trunk circles and sprinkled with earth.
Fertilizers in the form of powder or granules, as well as rotted compost and humus, are evenly distributed over the soil surface and dug up together with the ground. Digging can be replaced by light loosening.
If evergreen representatives of the flora are grown in an area with acidic soil, which requires liming, then dolomite flour is recommended as a fertilizer. All the nutrients it contains, including magnesium and calcium, are easily absorbed by the root system.
How to apply top dressing correctly?
As a rule, such trees need fertilization only in the early years, until they get stronger. Due to the long life of conifers, 10 years after planting they must be fed... This is usually done twice a year, in spring and late summer (or early fall). At the beginning of the growing season, only mineral fertilizers are needed, and nitrogen is allowed in small quantities for the accelerated growth of the tree during the warm season.
Mineral fertilizers for conifers
It is also customary in the spring to add organic matter, but only compost, in the process of loosening the soil (in order to improve the flow of moisture and air into it). It is mixed with a fertile layer, no more than 3 centimeters thick. So that the trees do not get used to abundant feeding and at the same time receive a full range of nutrients during the season, soil fertilization in spring can be halved, and the second half can be applied in June.
In winter, photosynthesis in conifers practically does not occur, so they almost do not need magnesium. Therefore, in the fall, you can add the same complex of minerals as in the spring, but it is recommended to focus on potassium, which strengthens the root system. Thanks to this additive, trees and shrubs will more easily endure severe cold. At the same time, in order to extend the assimilation of top dressing, it is possible to introduce a granular complex into the near-trunk circle in early autumn, so that, together with irrigation and absorbed rainwater, the necessary substances gradually enter the roots.
Fertilizer for conifers "Fertile Universal": composition and application
Fertilizer for conifers "Fertile Universal" contains nitrogen - 12%, phosphorus - 16%, potassium - 18%. Also, this fertilizer for conifers contains trace elements: magnesium, manganese, zinc, boron. It is specially prepared for the main application and top dressing when growing the main crops of indoor and open ground, fruit and ornamental crops of indoor and open ground, fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs, lawns and ornamental flowering plants. Fertilizer "Fertile Universal" promotes the development of the root system, accelerates the timing and uniformity of fruit ripening.
For the main application when preparing the soil before sowing, add 30-40 g per 1 m2 of cultivated and 40-50 g per 1 m2 of poorly cultivated (poor) soils.
When preparing planting holes for trees and shrubs, add 100-200 g per hole. Feeding growing trees should be carried out at the rate of 30-40 g per 1 m2 of the trunk circle.
To fertilize coniferous trees, evenly distribute the preparation in dry form over the surface of the trunk circle, followed by loosening. As an aqueous solution, dissolve 30 g in 10 liters of water. Fertilize after rain or watering.
In addition to "Universal Fertile", you can use modifications of this fertilizer with a carefully selected composition for each plant species, incl. and coniferous crops.
Mineral dressings for evergreens in autumn
Considering that soil fertilization is carried out in early May and in the middle of summer, it is worth considering which autumn fertilizers for conifers will not harm. You can use mulching of the near-root zone - this will protect the roots from freezing. The bark of trees, hay, fallen needles, humus, crushed stone, stones are used as mulch.
Coniferous feeding in autumn includes superphosphates... Fertilizers in dry form are scattered around the perimeter of the plants and watered. Can be brought under digging and also watered. During the winter, phosphorus is transformed and in the spring it becomes available for the root system. Autumn feeding of conifers with superphosphate is not dangerous, since the effect of it will be noticeable only after 4-6 months.
Video: How to properly fertilize conifers
Top dressing of conifers in August and September is not carried out, because the growth cycle is completed and new shoots are ripening for wintering. Growth stimulants are not needed during this period.
A complex approach
Spring feeding for conifers and summer care can be carried out using specially balanced formulations. Here is a list of the main ones:
- "Khvoinka" - suitable for a low-growing plantation in the spring, diluted in a proportion of 20 g per 20 liters, applied 3-4 times with a break of 2 weeks
- "Fertile Universal" - a means that stimulates the growth of shoots. When planting for each plant, you will need 100-200 g of the composition. In the form of another top dressing, use a solution of 10 liters of water and 30 g of the product
- Fertika Lux. The composition does not contain magnesium and nitrogen. Used once every 5 years at a dosage of 20 g per 10 l of water
- "Aquarin". Helps thuja maintain a healthy appearance, increases resistance to parasites and diseases. Used 5 times in the spring and summer. The last watering is at the beginning of autumn. Dosage: 20 g of product per 10 liters of water.
The listed and other ready-made formulations will facilitate the care of coniferous plantations on the site, allow you to balance nutrition and improve plant health. Compliance with dosages and terms is a prerequisite.

Fertilizers for conifers in spring, summer and autumn
Additional nourishment for garden conifers has two main goals: to support optimal growth and to maintain the intense color of the needles. It is impossible to provoke growth in late summer and autumn - this worsens wintering.
The vast majority of conifers are evergreen (except for larch). They have special, increased requirements for the formation of chlorophyll. Needles need this pigment in huge quantities, it is responsible for intense photosynthesis and rich color. The main component of chlorophyll is magnesium. Evergreen crops require special feeding with a high magnesium content.
Calcium and acidity levels
There is an opinion that coniferous crops need acidic soil. This is not entirely true. There is little free calcium in acidic soil, and it is vital in spring and early summer, at the stage of regrowth of young shoots of plants. In fact, many conifers grow well on slightly acidic soils (pH 4.5-6.5): juniper, thuja, spruce, fir. Neutral acidity is required by most pines (pH around 7). When planting exotic crops, you should know their needs.
High-quality fertilizers for ephedra necessarily contain a small amount of assimilable calcium. If deoxidation of the earth is necessary (with high acidity or for pine), then it will certainly be carried out with Dolomite flour, since it contains magnesium. When planting pines, up to half a kilogram of Dolomite flour is placed in the pit. Wood ash is usually not used.
If an urgent acidification of the plant is required (for example, after an erroneous planting in holes with ash or lime), it is carried out with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or vinegar - a glass of table vinegar (not essence!) In a bucket of water. Slightly acidifies the soil such a folk remedy as "bread" fertilizer - an aqueous infusion of rye bread: 1-2 such dressings are possible for conifers at the beginning of summer.
Sulfur, as well as iron and other trace elements
The need of evergreen crops for the mesoelement sulfur and the trace element iron is high. And in general, the more various microelements in the fertilizer, the better. Only chlorine is harmful.
The question of nitrogen and organics
Coniferous plants should not be fed with "fast" nitrogen: mineral nitrogen fertilizers, manure, bird droppings, herbal infusions... When planting and for mulching, we use peat, leaf humus, complex compost, turf soil. They supply nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus in optimal quantities and forms.
Many conifers hardly tolerate temperature, water, light stresses of winter and off-season. Drying of shoots, yellowing or browning of needles is a common problem of cultivars. Stimulants can support the pet, and in some cases even save it: Zircon, Novosil, HB-101.
Emergency rescue of a dying coniferous representative
Sometimes the injection of the vitalizer HB-101 helps. At a height of 100 cm from the soil level (for low-growing crowns - lower), we drill a thin hole in the stem of the plant to a depth of 4 cm, at an angle of 45 degrees. Then we inject a solution of the drug with a syringe (2.5 ml per 100 ml of water).
We "knock down" the result of plant feeding
So, under conifers at our summer cottage we do not apply manure and ash, chemicals with a large amount of nitrogen and chlorine. We use special fertilizers for conifers. In the spring we pour them into the root zone. During the summer (until the beginning of autumn), small liquid dressings and nutritious sprays are possible. We use special fertilizers and stimulants to prevent and combat yellowing.
Seasonal scheme (schedule) for feeding coniferous representatives at their summer cottage with fertilizers
Treatment and prevention of yellowing of needles
1. In the spring on the surface of the earth (without embedding!) We scatter the granular preparation-vitalizer HB-101: 1 g per 1 sq. m. root zone, up to 6 g per adult plant.
2. Effective watering with Zircon and simultaneous spraying with Ferovit (NEST products).
After the snow melts, when the ground warms up to +8 degrees, water the conifers with Zircon (1 ml per bucket of water) and spray with Ferovit (5 ml per bucket). We repeat the procedure after a week. If the needles turn yellow, then 4 such procedures are recommended with an interval of 10 days to restore the color. If the needles of the plant have darkened and crumbled, then we treat for the growth of a new one throughout the summer. Ferovit can be replaced with Siliplant.
3. Application of special fertilization in the spring and monthly during the summer.
- Pokon: Remedy for brown pine needles
- Florovit against browning of needles
- "Green Needle" (Buisk Fertilizers).
4. Spring addition of Kalimagnesia (40 g / sq. M of the trunk circle) or watering with magnesium sulfate solution (20 g per bucket).
The main fertilization is in the spring
After the snow melts and the ground thaws, it is recommended to add a dry fertilizer mixture, followed by loosening and watering.
- Fertika-Spring for evergreens
- Long-lasting pokon for conifers
- Bona Forte coniferous granulated
- Hera coniferous
- Potassium humate.
For large and problematic specimens, it is possible to repeat the procedure in late spring or early summer.
Make-up in summer
From the end of May to the end of August (and in the south - and in September), fertilizing watering and spraying is useful twice a month. We dilute the powder or liquid concentrate in water according to the instructions for the package.
Options (select with the mark "for conifers"):
- Bona Forte (liquid),
- Fertika-Summer for evergreens.
According to experienced gardeners, Uniflor-bud and Uniflor-cactus (at the beginning of summer) and Uniflor-micro (at the end of August) are also effective: they have a quite suitable composition.
