What is a landscape designer for?

What is a landscape designer for?

Often, when summer residents are discussing the development of their site, they have a question: is it necessary to develop a design and plan their weave? It would seem, and so it is already obvious, where it is necessary to lay paths, where (to which nearest ditch) to divert water, what and where to plant. After all, everything seems to be simple - the garden should be done where the plants will be warmer and where there is more light for them.

Willows love water (so they need to be planted where the plot is lower.

A hedge of larger plants is needed along the fence.

At home you need to make a rose garden or a flower garden, and let the wife take care of it herself and plant what she likes. After all, there are a lot of books on landscape design and, having bought them and graduated from courses in some prestigious place, you can kill several birds with one stone: your wife will be with her favorite business all the time, it will be possible to save on specialists, and it will be possible to declare in opposition to some neighbors: we did it ourselves ”.

Of course, all this can be done. But questions arise: “If all this is so simple, why does the number of landscape firms increase every year, why does the cost of projects grow steadily? And why is more and more literature devoted to this seemingly not even a secondary problem? " Many gardeners and summer residents have long understood that it is inappropriate to use their site only as an auxiliary one. Gone are the days of hungry socialism, when in autumn one could arouse the envy of neighbors by the amount of collected bags of apples, potatoes, kilograms of tomatoes. And about cucumbers - there was so much talk and gossip.

Now you won’t surprise anyone. It is economically unprofitable to grow potatoes in your own home to fully feed your family. And about peppers and tomatoes can only be talked about as a hobby. It is easier to grow them in the south, and their cost is much lower there. Therefore, what used to be assessed as “oddity”: well, Maria Ivanovna grows flowers, but not for sale, but for herself, is now becoming the norm. People realized that it is possible to live in harmony with nature and not receive only material benefits from it in the form of kilograms and centners per hectare.

And then there was a landscape design on our sites. The primary shortage of planting material gradually began to be supplanted by the rather good products of Western nurseries, and the cost of seedlings was steadily declining year after year. The range of crops became wider and wider. But the further people went into the jungle of decorating their land, the more problems became.

Why did my bushes die, but Katya’s not? Maybe we have the wrong land or were they planted at the wrong time? And those ate that were planted 10 years ago - so small, fluffy - suddenly gave up and are already shading half of the plot! You can't cover everything.

And the main work is still there. There is neither time nor energy for everything. At work, there are a lot of problems, and then somewhere else you need to get a land machine. Moreover, it is necessary to decide: what kind of soil is needed - field or peat? There are too many problems.

And then there is a need for a specialist. It's good if you yourself are already retired or your wife is free. You can then devote the rest of your life to all these problems. And if not?

Let's start with the fact that someone else's eye sees better than his own. And over a stranger is not dominated by the intra-family problems of the owners of the site. That is why the landscape designer is valuable, that he must know in advance: who and how will live on this earth, where the dog will run, how and where the children will play at the moment when the adults are frying meat. Moreover, children's fun should not overlap with the problems of adults, but supervision over naughty children should be almost constant.

Children grow up, and the playground must gradually transform into some other quality. It can become a place for youth gatherings or turn into a magnificent flower garden. And without any special alterations and capital investments. And for this you need to know which planting material to use from the very beginning of the construction of the site, how it will grow, to what height. Whether it is fluffy and spreading, or it can be cut and shaped. And you can't forget about the toxicity of berries, not to mention allergies. If suddenly there is a problem of mismatching tastes of the husband, wife, and especially their parents - what to do?

The landscaper must carefully zoning the site and allocate to each of the tenants that part where he will feel comfortable. Moreover, this zoning should be natural and not cause any contradictions in plants and people. If your grandmother loves to grow tomatoes in a greenhouse, and your son-in-law laughs at this, separate the vegetable garden area from the rest of the garden with either an ornamental or fruit hedge, and another family problem will be gently resolved.

The site must be well maintained. A lawn mower must be running on the lawn. Therefore, when designing paths, curtains and landings, you need to take into account the width of the lawn mower, in addition, you need to remember that the trimmer is designed for mowing grass along fences, near stones and other irregularities, and it will never give a smooth lawn. There are rules for the use of herbicides and pesticides on the plots. When pickling paths with roundup, it should not get into water bodies. When processing ornamental plants from pests, you need to watch that these drugs do not get on fruit crops and vice versa.

Remember: creating a landscape on your site is a huge work, and a specialist who, in addition to theoretical experience, also practically knows how to operate what he has designed, should do such a difficult job. Do not hesitate to ask the experts: how will these trees and shrubs grow further, how should and should they be closed for the winter?

And won't the shelter boxes for the standard roses of the friends of the dacha owners shock if these boxes stand on the site for seven months? And how many years did this designer work as a simple gardener before he picked up a pencil?

By the way, the ability to see the landscape, its development is a vocation, and here the presence of a diploma does not always coincide with the presence of a vocation and vice versa. Therefore, if you decide to invite a specialist, take an interest in what and how he managed to do before. Good luck everyone!

What is a landscape designer for - a garden and a vegetable garden

July 19, 2016 Natalia

Landscape design is a fairly new phenomenon, at least for the inhabitants of the post-Soviet space, it gained popularity in the late 90s - early 2000s, when everything foreign and beautiful began to come into fashion. So, landscape design as such is, first of all, the art of landscaping and beautifying garden or park plots.

In this short review, I will talk about why landscape design is necessary for owners of summer cottages and backyards. All people in the world love it when their site, house or dacha is surrounded by neatness and livability. In view of this, gardeners, florists and other specialists in the landscape environment have united into one profession - a landscape designer, who is actually an expert in fulfilling your wishes for the improvement of the local area.

Do you like Scandinavian naturalistic style, fountains or do you want a cherry orchard near your house? For these professionals, nothing is impossible - the main thing is to set the task correctly and as clearly as possible. You may have a question: why invite someone from the outside to improve the site, because you yourself can plant cherries and apple trees, and installing fountains is also not a problem?

Here the whole difference is in the result of the work. The fact is that you, not being a specialist in

as a landscape designer

gardening art, you may not take into account the peculiarities of the layout of your site, for example, the flow of water, the peculiarities of the coexistence of the plants that you want to plant, sunlight and other nuances. As a result, you will have cherries where it is better to grow honeysuckle, and roses where it is better to grow a host. The specialist will immediately see all this. The rose will be planted in the optimal place for the rose garden, and the fountain will be installed where excess moisture will not harm either the plants or the house.

Although, nothing prevents you from mastering this profession if you wish. If you want to be a landscape designer yourself on your site, then you should first acquire a rather big baggage of knowledge and skills. To do this, you will need to draw up a detailed plan of the site and draw on it where, what and in what quantity will be located. Do not forget about drawing up a cost estimate - the costs recorded on paper are much easier to edit and control - the work is painstaking, but pleasant.

Consider also the compatibility of plants, the distance between seedlings, the climate and the nearest weather conditions, and also do not forget about the plants - allergens that can interfere with you or your loved ones. It is possible to master all this on your own when the time is not rushing and there are no other worries.

If you are a busy person and you do not have time to immerse yourself in mastering a new profession, entrust the landscape design of your site to specialists. People with knowledge and experience will help you turn not only a large estate, but also a small dacha into a cozy, original corner.

We recommend that you see sketches of design ideas. Video: Beautiful design of a garden plot with your own hands.

Me myself or why do I need a landscape designer

"Nobody except me knows what I want!" One can hardly argue with that. However, is this phrase alone enough to make the garden of your dreams come true? In this article, we give some tips for those who want to do without a designer, as well as give reasons why you should not neglect the services of a specialist to create a long-lasting, harmonious and safe garden on your site.

Vegetable garden for beginners: where to start your gardening experience

A vegetable garden for novice summer residents is most likely more an organizational topic than a physical one, so here we will consider some principles of laying beds and small tips:

1. Choose the right location

Most plants prefer plenty of sun and a little shade in the afternoon. Choosing the right spot for your garden takes some thought, so spend some time on your property observing the distribution of light throughout the day. In addition, pay attention to the trees both on your site and on those nearby. See what kind of shadow they give and when. And don't forget that the winter sunny area can become shaded when dense foliage appears on the trees and bushes in the spring.

2. Decide which beds you want

This decision must be made at the earliest stages of planning. Different types of beds have different advantages:

  • Raised beds Is one of the most effective ways to start growing vegetables. The materials are not too expensive, there is no need to dig up the soil, there is a barrier against weeds.

Depending on the planned height and width, different labor costs will be required for the device of high beds. This type of bed is becoming more and more popular, but there are other options that also work great.

  • Containers. If space is limited, a container garden can be a great solution. Large, medium and small pots are great for growing almost all types of vegetables. Lettuce, peppers, herbs, and garlic grow especially well in containers. Plus, the container can be easily rearranged to find the perfect location.
  • Planting plants directly into the ground. People have used this method for centuries. In this case, it is necessary to check the quality of the soil and add the necessary organic matter. For such a planting, the concept of combined planting (using companion plants) is ideal.

3. Seedlings or seeds?

In garden stores, it is very difficult to resist and not buy a lot of different seeds at once. At first glance, it seems that it will not be difficult to grow them at all. But, as always with everything, the art of growing plants requires skill. Some plants grow better than others. Some seeds should be planted directly into the soil, such as radishes, carrots, beans, lettuce, and Swiss chard. Others require growing seedlings, which requires extra care, lighting and proper watering. It may be best to purchase seedlings from a trusted nursery at the beginning of your gardening. Choose plants with strong stems and bright green leaves.

4. Scheduling watering

If it rains frequently in your area, your garden area may need drainage. If the rains are irregular, you need to think about how best to provide the plants with the necessary moisture. Modern watering systems can be set up to run on a timer, but many people choose to water by hand as it removes weeds and checks plants for signs of disease and pests at the same time.

Regardless of how you plan to water your garden, you will need to prepare for it. Get hoses, nozzles, watering cans and get ready to spend some time in the garden. For example, when arranging a vegetable garden, we made a raised barrel and disguised it with a chic blackberry bush https://ekosad-vsem.ru/obustrojstvo-ogoroda/

5. These nasty pests

Pests have haunted gardeners ever since the first garden was planted. Birds will peck at your berries, squirrels will steal everything that they can carry with them, insects are innumerable, and for some reason they are all hungry (from our point of view).

However, it is possible to defend against them quite successfully. There are quite a few means against insects (including organic ones), in addition, you can attract beneficial predatory insects to your site and / or plant plants that repel pests. And remember, if the soil is healthy, your plants will grow healthy, and it will be easier to defend against pests.

Barriers are created against birds, squirrels, snakes and other unwanted animals on the site. Berries and fruits are well protected from birds and squirrels by tulle or netting.

6. Top dressing

If you want to have a fertile vegetable garden with healthy and tasty fruits for many years, you need to take care of the health of the soil. Biologically active soil allows plants to grow healthy and do not need a lot of fertilizers. It is not at all necessary to spend a fortune to buy fertilizers in stores; there are ways of feeding with natural, organic materials. In addition, do not forget that excessive feeding can even harm.

7. What and when to plant

In books and articles on gardening and horticulture, it is not difficult to find a lot of useful information about when to plant plants, how to take care of them, which companion plants are suitable for which crops. All this is very interesting and useful, but if you are a beginner, at the very beginning you just need to find out which vegetables grow well in your area and do not require special care. There will be not so few such plants, it is with them that it is worth starting to gain experience in gardening.

Knowing the correct time to plant the selected plants is also important: depending on the climate, the planting date can vary quite significantly. Also, consider planting in multiple steps. After all, you do not need a whole bed of lettuce or radish at the same time? Although everyone goes through this temptation ...

Only then there is an understanding that these plants need to be planted in several stages with an interval of a week or two - then the crop can also be harvested in several stages.

8. Experience of old-timers

One of the best ways to succeed in your new garden is to find an old-timer - someone who has dedicated years of building a successful garden in your area. His experience can be invaluable to you, since he has already fought all the pests that may be found in your area, planted a variety of vegetables, protected his plants from unexpected frosts and snowless harsh winters, and now knows how to get maximum benefit from his site.

Distracting maneuvers

There were places on the site that needed to be blocked, or at least to divert attention. For example, despite the sufficient area of the garden, 25 acres, the nearby neighboring houses turned out to be so large that it seemed as if they were hanging over it. When communicating, it turned out that the owner prefers deciduous trees, as the autumn color makes the garden more colorful and more interesting. Therefore, large-leaved linden, red maple Acer rubrum, Scandinavian multi-stemmed mountain ash were chosen as overlapping plants. Dodong and rowan Autumn spire... These breeds grow rather quickly, they take root well in our capricious climate, and most importantly, they have a wonderful autumn color, which dresses the garden in “crimson and gold”.

Also necessary, but alas, not at all a decorative element was the gas equipment, located by the focal point just opposite the windows of the main house. One of the most hardy vesicles was used as a background plant on the fence - Dart's Gold... The color of the leaves is quite unusual: at the beginning of summer, the leaf plate acquires a golden hue, then gradually becomes light green, and with the onset of autumn it completely transforms into a bronze-orange color.

The shrub has a very dense crown, and the yellow coloring made it possible to distract attention from the gas equipment of the same color.

Deciduous plants would not help block the view of the equipment during the off-season and winter, so the choice fell on the rocky juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) Moonglow... A pyramidal shrub that can reach 4–5 m and a width of 1.5 m. The trunk is densely covered with branches with scaly needles of a bluish-blue color. It is light-loving enough, but at the same time it is extremely unpretentious to soils. It feels most comfortable in loose and slightly acidic soil. The plant is frost-hardy, but winter precipitation can damage the branches with its weight.

So that the shape of the bush does not lose its neat and slender appearance, it is advisable to tie the branches before the onset of cold weather for the winter. In support of the bluish color, a rocky juniper was planted in nearby compositions Blue arrow, recognized as one of the most decorative species of conifers and shrubs. Rigid, almost vertical shoots begin almost from the base and form a narrow arrow-shaped shape, the elegance of which does not change over the years or under the pressure of snow. In the first year after planting, the plant is sensitive to intense spring sunlight, so we recommend covering it with a special sunscreen. Such a shelter will protect the plant from February burns and will not spoil the decorative appearance of the garden in winter.

An almost straight path from the gate to the house was blocked with tiered compositions with the inclusion of conifers, shrubs with all-season decorativeness and a variety of perennial and bulbous crops.
